Maldives

Welcome to the Maldives Boat Club! We hope that you will allow us to help you plan your diving experience in this unique and fascinating country.

A Bit about Maldives

The smallest Asian nation in both size and population, Maldives is actually formed from a double chain of twenty-six atolls. It is roughly 435 miles (or 700 kilometers) from the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, and is actually set within the Laccadive Sea region of the Indian Ocean. Interestingly enough, the country is the “lowest” on the planet due to the average ground level height being only 4’ 11” above sea level. The highest point of land throughout the entire nation stands at only 7’ 7” in height above sea level as well.

It is officially known as the Republic of Maldives and it covers an area of nearly 90,000 square kilometers. This massive terrain also makes the country a place of immense diversity both above and below the waves. Consider that a diver will be able to choose from over one thousand islets to base an exploration, and of these only two hundred are currently inhabited. Of course some of the best diving experiences tend to come from the “live aboard” options rather than the land-based ones.

The capital of the nation is the city of Malé, and it has a reasonably-sized population of just over one hundred thousand inhabitants. Of course it is not for city life that most people make a visit, and travelers frequently find the rural areas of Maldives to be among the most beautiful places in the world.

Experienced and novice divers head to Maldives on a year round basis, and many opt for a live aboard rather than a land-based stay. This is unusual in the world of diving and travel, but most who have visited agree that it is an unforgettable and worthy experience. Remaining at sea allows the visitor to experience the most and the finest dive sites possible, and all with great comfort and ease.
